What is Leaky Gut?
You've heard the term many times before. Or maybe you haven’t.
But you still aren’t completely sure what it is or what it even means?⠀
⠀
Leaky gut, also known as intestinal permeability is a condition that creates gaps in the lining of the intestinal walls. These gaps allow food particles, bacteria, and waste products to seep directly into the bloodstream. ⠀
⠀
The gut is only supposed to let nutrients into the body while keeping everything else out. ⠀
⠀
So, when the gut becomes “leaky” it’s referring to the loss of gut barrier integrity such that substances can “leak” into the body that isn't supposed to.⠀
⠀
Inside our gut barrier is 80% of our immune system. When substances such as undigested food particles, bacteria, waste products & toxins (that don’t belong) cross into the body, the immune system is activated. ⠀
⠀
This immune activation that results from leaky gut causes body-wide inflammation that is associated with all chronic illnesses. Because the functions of a healthy gut microbiome are so diverse, any number of symptoms can appear due to dysbiosis such as allergies, autoimmunity, diabetes, digestive distress like bloating and gas, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, skin issues such as itchy skin, eczema, and psoriasis, brain fog, chronic fatigue, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
⠀
The key to keeping the lining of the gut tight is to follow a nutrient-dense eating approach. Eat unprocessed, anti-inflammatory foods that support gut health. If you have any food sensitives or intolerances you will also want to stay away from those foods. If you aren’t sure if you do, following a digestive reset for 30 days in the best (and cheapest way) to find out. Other things that are also crucial to our gut health include managing stress, getting 8hrs of sleep a night, moving your body in a way that feels good to you, knowing which foods make YOU feel good and which don’t, getting vitamin D, practicing gratitude and bringing joy to your life every day.
